40% League
The Rulebook

How the league works

Everything a new team needs to know.

What is the 40% League?

It's a way to track your life like a basketball season. Every good thing you do counts as a stat — like points and rebounds in a real game. The big idea: you don't need a perfect day. If you do about 40% of what a full day would be, you win. That's it. That's the league.

Why 40%?

Because that's a pro number. In real basketball, shooting 40% from the field is genuinely good — the best players who ever lived missed most of their shots. They're still the best players who ever lived. Greatness isn't hitting everything. It's showing up and shooting, season after season.

Players & plays

A player is anything in your life you want to keep an eye on — your work, your health, your friends, your sleep. You pick them and name them. Your list of players is your roster (your team).

A play is one small, repeatable action that belongs to a player — like one hour of focused work, a run, or calling a friend back. When you do it, you log it with one tap. That's the whole game: run plays, watch the stats add up.

Tip: keep a few layups in your plays — easy ones you can run before you leave the house, like a good breakfast, brushing your teeth, or setting your top three priorities. Easy shots get you on the board early and lock in the good habits.

Points, Rebounds & Assists

Every play scores exactly one of three stats:

  • Points — work and progress. Anything that moves your life forward: a task done, a bill paid, a project pushed ahead.
  • Rebounds — taking care of yourself. Sleep, exercise, eating well, rest. The stuff that keeps you standing.
  • Assists — other people. Time with friends, helping someone out, showing up for someone.

Not sure which stat a play should score? Ask three questions. Did this push something forward? Points. Did this look after me? Rebounds. Was this for someone else? Assists.

Each play also has a value from 1 to 3: 1 for a small act, 2 for a solid one, 3 for something hard or something that really matters. The value is about effort, not results. A tough conversation counts even if it went badly.

Score it honestly

There's no opponent here. The only team you're playing is last season's you. Real numbers show you what's actually working, so you can get better — padded numbers just look nice and teach you nothing. Log what really happened, at the effort it really took.

What makes a good roster?

One test: if something matters enough that you'd want to notice when it goes quiet, give it its own player. Three clients you can't afford to ignore? That's three players — not one player called "Work". If tracking something on its own wouldn't tell you anything new, fold it into a bigger player. And a zero next to a name is information, not a judgment — only you know how often each player should get minutes.

What does FG% mean for me?

FG% is your shooting percentage for the day. Every play you log is one shot, out of a possible 16, about one for every waking hour. Log 7 plays and you've hit 40% — that's a made day. You don't need all 16. You never needed all 16.

Over a season, your FG% shows how steadily you're showing up — not how perfect you are. A day under 40% isn't a loss. It's just a day. You shoot again tomorrow.
